#226: Obi (category: clothing or wraparound bands)

Obi

An obi is a broad sash wrapped around a waist when you are wearing a kimono or a training uniform for martial arts such as Judo and Karate. Especially for a women's kimono, an obi works decoratively rather than functionally.

In Japanese, wraparound bands of books or CDs are also called "obi", because their appearances are similar to kimonos with obis. It is said that the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a famous character in Star Wars, derives from the Japanese word "obi".
