Ancient Japanese people said cranes could live for 1,000 years and turtles for 10,000 years. In reality, they cannot live so long, of course. Anyway, people regarded these animals in pairs as the symbol of longevity.

Many artists in this country have been using cranes and turtles for their subject matters. That's the reason why not a few modern Japanese still value them as lucky animals.
