The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, is Japan's first national art museum. It first opened in December 1952 in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, and reopened in its current location in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, in June 1969.
Its Kyoto Branch opened in April 1963. It became independent as the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, in June 1967.
