#039: Bon (category: holiday)
Bon is a Japanese holiday season in the middle of August. Its polite expression Obon is more common among Japanese. Originally, Bon was a specific period having a religious meaning in Buddhism, at which people hold a service for ancestors. But nowadays, Bon tends to be just an excuse for people to take summer holidays to go back to their home towns regardless of religious motives.
In this Obon holiday season, Bon-odori (Bon-dance) festival is held in most local areas throughout Japan. Local people gather at a place to enjoy Bon-odori. Bon and Bon-odori are very important seasonal events for Japanese.
