#479: Byodo-in (category: Buddhist temple)
Byodo-in is a Buddhist temple in Uji City, located to the south of Kyoto City (refer to #035). It is a factor of Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in and around Kyoto.
The temple was originally a vacation house of a Japanese ancient aristocrat. It was reopened as a Buddhist temple in 1052. Also, it is inscribed on the surface of a Japanese 10 yen coin.
