Moronobu

Moronobu Hishikawa was one of the most important ukiyo-e artists in the early Edo period. "Beauty Looking Back", his most popular work, has been known and appreciated worldwide.

Originally, ukiyo-e were mass-produced illustrations as woodblock prints. But Moronobu established nikuhitsu-ga (ukiyo-e drawn by an artist directly on silk or paper canvases) as a form of art.
