At first, The Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art opened in 1964 as the Fukuoka Prefectural Culture Hall with the functions of a library and a museum.

In 1985, the library section was separated from the culture hall, and the remnant became the current independent museum. It is located in Fukuoka City.
