Kochi Prefecture occupies the southern part of Shikoku Island (refer to #064). It is the third least populated prefecture in Japan after Tottori and Shimane Prefectures.
The 89% mountainous area ratio is the highest in Japan for a prefecture. It is known for its many clear streams, such as the Shimanto River.
