Shoen (Uemura)

Shoen Uemura was a Japanese painter in the 19th and 20th centuries. She was born and grew up in the central area of Kyoto (refer to #035), and drew many bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women).

Back then, it was unusual for a woman to become a painter in Japan. But she played an active role in the art industry and was the first woman who received the Order of Culture in Japanese history.
