#961: Kumamoto (category: prefecture)
Kumamoto Prefecture is located on the west side of the central part of Kyushu Island (refer to #063). Kumamoto Castle was damaged by a major earthquake in 2016, and its castle tower was restored in 2021.
The Aso Caldera in this prefecture is the second largest caldera in Japan. Unzen-Amakusa National Park (refer to #400) straddles Kumamoto and Nagasaki Prefectures.
